(Baltimore)—Bach in Baltimore announced today three winter concerts to keep Baltimore warm with Baroque music. Winter programming features many beloved Baroque classics including Handel’s large scale choral and orchestral work Music for the Royal Fireworks at the Winter Fireworks Concert on January 6 and instrumental treasures including Handel’s Water Music and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 at the Baroque Masters Medley Concert on February 3. Under the direction of T. Herbert Dimmock, the Bach in Baltimore Choir & Orchestra will perform additional works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann.

Bach in Baltimore’s 2019 Winter Concerts & Events begins on Monday, January 1 at 4 p.m. with a New Year’s Day Baroque Celebration, which included an afternoon concert followed by a three-course cabaret dinner fundraiser. The concert showcases the beloved first-chair instrumentalists of the Bach in Baltimore Orchestra playing their favorite Baroque works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann. Our New Year’s Day Baroque Celebration has become a cherished tradition for Baroque instrumental music enthusiasts. After the concert, the festivities will continue with a fundraising event at Germano’s Piattini, located at 300 S. High St., Little Italy, Baltimore. Enjoy a delicious three-course dinner and cabaret musical entertainment while supporting Bach in Baltimore. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Forty-five percent of the evening’s proceeds will go to Bach in Baltimore. There are several ticket options available for the concert and soiree: Concert tickets are $25 in advance/ $27 at door; Dinner tickets are $85 (includes tax and gratuity); Concert & Dinner Combo Package is $100 (includes tax and gratuity).

On January 6 at 4 p.m., Bach in Baltimore performs a Winter Fireworks Concert at Towson United Methodist Church in Towson. The lively afternoon concert features three grand works: Bach’s Cantata 171 & Cantata 91 and Handel’s Music for Royal Fireworks, a band suite that premiered with fireworks in London’s Green Park for an audience of over 12,000 in 1749.  Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi are all featured at A Baroque Masters Medley Concert on February 3 at 4 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church. The dynamic program includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1. The Brandenburg Concertos are considered the finest compositions of the Baroque era, and Bach in Baltimore is thrilled to present this magnificent work along with Handel’s Water Music and Vivaldi’ Concerto for Violin, Bassoon, Oboe and Horn. Tickets for both January 6 and February 3 concerts are each $25 in advance and $27 at the door.

Our Winter Fireworks concert features three grand works. Bach’s bold and lively Cantata 171 is a grandiose cantata that opens with a full chorus and vibrant orchestra of oboes and trumpets. It is most well known as the first version of the second chorus in the Credo of the Mass in B minor. The equally impressive Music for the Royal Fireworks is a band suite composed by Handel to celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. It premiered with fireworks in London’s Green Park for an audience of over 12,000 in 1749. Closing the program is the bass aria from Bach’s Cantata 51: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen! Or Exult in God in every land is a grand virtuoso work, considered one of the finest works written for trumpet and soprano soloist.

Bch, Handel, and Vivaldi changed the world with their virtuosic and life-affirming compositions. Over three-hundred years later, we still cannot get enough of their sublime music. We open this concert will the best of the best—Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, which continues to stir the soul and is the benchmark of Baroque music. Handel’s ebullient Water Music will enchant and have you dreaming of a picnic in the park, having been composed for a concert on the River Thames for King George I. We close the program with Vivaldi’s jolly Concerto for Violin, Bassoon, Oboe and Horn. This invigorating piece will warm your core as winter rages on outside.
